Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about joining and running a farming cooperative.

Can I join if I only have a small farm (under 1 hectare)? โ–ผ
Yes! Cooperatives are specifically designed for smallholder farmers. Even farmers with 0.25 hectares can join. The whole point is collective strength โ€” your small contribution matters.
How much does it cost to join? โ–ผ
Typically โ‚ฑ500-โ‚ฑ5,000 in share capital (one-time, refundable if you leave). Some cooperatives also charge a small membership fee of โ‚ฑ100-โ‚ฑ500.
Can I leave if I change my mind? โ–ผ
Yes. You must give 30-60 days written notice. Your share capital will be refunded within 60-90 days, minus any outstanding loans.
Can I borrow money from the cooperative? โ–ผ
Yes! Cooperatives offer loans at 1-3% monthly interest โ€” much lower than informal lenders (5-10%/mo). Maximum loan is typically 2-5x your share capital.
Do cooperatives pay taxes? โ–ผ
Cooperatives with reserves under โ‚ฑ10M are tax-exempt under RA 9520. This includes income tax, VAT on cooperative transactions, and documentary stamp tax.
How do we get PCIC crop insurance? โ–ผ
Apply through your cooperative for group rates. Premium is as low as 1.5% with 50-75% government subsidy. Covers typhoons, floods, drought, pests, fire, and theft.
Is organic farming profitable in Cebu? โ–ผ
Yes! Organic products command 20-50% premium prices, especially in Cebu's hotels and restaurants. DA subsidizes organic certification (40-60% cheaper via cooperative).
Can our cooperative export? โ–ผ
Yes! Register with BOI, get DA/BAI/FDA clearances. PHILEXPORT offers free export readiness assessment. Cebu products with export potential: dried mango, VCO, organic vegetables, seaweed.
How long before the cooperative becomes profitable? โ–ผ
Most cooperatives break even in 1-2 years. Significant profit typically comes in years 2-3 as membership grows and services expand. Patience and consistent effort are key.
